The Breitling Wingwalkers

At Teuge Wings, Wheels and Goggles 2013 we had the opportunity to mount one of our go pro camera's on the wing of one of  aerosuperbatics Boeing Stearmans, join Freya "Princes" Patterson during her modern wingwalking act.

In 1918 an American flier called Ormer Locklear came up with a stunt that was guaranteed to wow the crowds: he would climb out of the aeroplane and walk along the wing and even climb from one aeroplane onto to another. Apparently Locklear first clambered out of the cockpit to fix a technical problem while training during the war. A normal person would have landed and then sorted out the problem. Pretty soon you couldn’t operate a flying circus that didn’t have a wing walking act and Locklear was soon joined by numerous other daredevils including the wonderfully named Ethal Dare, the world’s first female wing walk who like Locklear would walk from plane to plane.

After the war the interest for this art, was lost. But those barnstorming days of the ’20s and 30s and the characters who manned the flying circuses hadn’t been forgotten by those with a deep love of flying and a passion for its history. A few wing walking teams operated in America in the 1970s but it wasn’t until frustrated barnstormer Vic Norman founded his famous Aerosuperbatics wing walking team in the early 1980s that the sight of dare devils handstanding and flying upside down on the wing was seen in Europe.

Sukhoi SU-26 MX - PH SMX Teuge Wings, Wheels and Goggles 2013

 Frank "Woody" van Houten

Aerobatics is often classified as stunt flying which it is not. During every sequence design, whether it’s a flight in the box, an airshow or an airrace, safety is paramount. No pilot will be allowed to fly at a level which he’s not ready for. During the flying there’s many challenges for the pilots. It’s all about precision, accuracy, energy management and situational awareness. Even the smallest lapse in concentration might result in a bad manoeuvre and therefore zero points from the judges. So, we refer to aerobatics as “the art of flying”
Aerobatic contests are organized all over the world, with National Championships, European Championships and a World Championship. Apart from this, aerobatics are never missing on airshows and attract many spectators. More information about Frank and his aircraft can be found on his website

Extra 330SC - G-IIHI Mark Jefferies Air Displays

Mark Jefferies performing at Oostwold Airshow 2013

Words cant describe the abilities and spectacle of Mark Jefferies flying, other display pilots stand asking themselves how on earth was that flown, what’s happening aerodynamically. Mark has been part of medal winning teams on several occasions not only for individual flights but that of large formations flying in the Aerostars team. Mark Jefferies is one of the top pilots in the world. His free-style solo display in his Extra 330SC is second to none. With his own unique flying skills and the extreme capabilities of his aircraft, Mark performs manoeuvres in this aircraft that just should not be possible and he never fails to impress the crowds.

Be the first man on the moon!

 Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite*

I blame you for the moonlit sky
And the dream that died with the Eagle's flight
I blame you for the moonlit nights
When I wonder why are the seas still dry?
Don't blame this sleeping satellite

Did we fly to the moon too soon?
Did we squander the chance? In the rush of the race
The reason we chase is lost in romance
And still we try to justify the waste
For a taste of man's greatest adventure

I blame you for the moonlit sky
And the dream that died with the Eagle's flight
I blame you for the moonlit nights
When I wonder why are the seas still dry?
Don't blame this sleeping satellite

Have we got what it takes to advance?
Did we peak too soon? If the world is so green
Then why does it scream under a blue moon?
We wonder why the earth's sacrificed
For the price of its greatest treasure

I blame you for the moonlit sky
And the dream that died with the Eagle's flight
I blame you for the moonlit nights
When I wonder why are the seas still dry?
Don't blame this sleeping satellite

And when we shoot for the stars
What a giant step have we got what it takes
To carry the weight of this concept?
Or pass it by like a shot in the dark
Miss the mark with a sense of adventure

I blame you for the moonlit sky
And the dream that died with the Eagle's flight
I blame you for the moonlit nights
When I wonder why are the seas still dry?
Don't blame this sleeping satellite

Dutch Military Aviation Centennial

The Air Force celebrated the 100th anniversary of Dutch Military aviation on the 14 and 15 of June 2013 at Volkel Airbase. On the 1st of June 1913, the Aviation Department was founded with the purchase of the first Military aircraft 'De Brik'.  Highlight of the airshow at Volkel was a formation flight of 10 F-16´s and a KLM Boeing 737 carrying some very special passengers from the Hoogvliegers.

For the occasion a monument was revealed, a replica of the Dutch first Military Airplane was placed on 'de Tammer Rotonde' in Soest. On the anniversary was also the occasion to memorize the Air force soldiers who lost their lives, this ceremony ended with a fly-by of four F-16s.

This day also marked the closing of the Military Aviation Museum in Soesterberg, this museum will be remodeled because of the merging with the Army Museum in Delft.

Next year the National Military Museum will open its doors again at the former airbase.

We are proud to launch the AerospaceTV blog on this very special anniversary.
